Some people don’t have free time because they wanted to, because they chose to avoid having moments of leisure and disconnection. As surprising as it may seem, this type of profile does exist and these are not isolated cases.

Some are afraid to stop. Others feel a certain uneasiness in moments of inactivity, when nothing is asked of them other than to be yourself and to let the time flow in peace and harmony.

You might think that this is all a question of personality. Obviously, many are those who, because of their active and proactive character, always need to be in motion, to imagine things, to create, to plan … Nevertheless, there is another case of figure which, him, is problematic.

Indeed, some people cannot imagine having a moment of inactivity. And this, because this calm leads to an encounter with oneself. It sometimes happens that this inner reality does not please and is even embarrassing.

In this case, having a fixed routine full of tasks and activities serves as an escape: it is a good way to forget and not to see what is going on inside of you. Let’s dig a little deeper into this topic.

We often hear phrases like “I have no time for anything” or “there are not enough hours in a day for me to do all that I have to do” . In a way, we have become accustomed to filling our days with tasks and obligations.

On top of that, we believe that having things to do gives us status. Being busy and preoccupied is our normal state. We even look a little askance at someone who is having fun, doing nothing, slowing down the pace and allowing himself some free time.

However, let’s be clear: the problem is not with someone who, several hours a day, chooses to do nothing and decides, very healthily, to rest. Far from the epithets like “lazy” or “irresponsible”, in reality, those who offer themselves leisure time offer themselves quality of life.

These are the people obsessed with “I must” who sometimes contain problematic realities. Behind this behavior there may be, for example, anxiety.

When doing nothing leads to anxiety

The expression “do nothing” is generally quite controversial. Sometimes it can be the clear result of carelessness in our functions, of not having achieved what is expected of us. However, when we use this phrase in the context of leisure time,  doing nothing  actually translates into something necessary, healthy, and even productive.

  • Reading, walking, resting, having good conversations, enjoying a landscape and the present moment fill this  doing nothing  with meaning and transcendence. However, for many people, these activities generate great anxiety.
  • People with no free time, those who always have something to do, actually don’t know what it means to relax. Just knowing that they have nothing planned and no obligations makes them feel anxious. They don’t just feel unproductive: they also feel like they’re not meeting expectations.
  • One thing is also obvious. Leisure time is also an invitation to reconnect with oneself. Connecting with our selves is something essential that we should be practicing every day. Nevertheless, there are many who do not feel comfortable on this inner journey.

This personal universe sometimes hides facts that require our attention. It is useless to take refuge in work, because the discomfort will always be there.

An accelerated world, minds unable to enjoy leisure time

Sometimes we get stuck in a lifestyle where being busy is the norm. By doing this, we are not only normalizing the inability to enjoy leisure time, we are also laying the groundwork for anxiety.

  • Some people, even while on vacation, seek out a thousand occupations in order to feel competent and even productive. They feel like they’re part of the mold of this demanding society that wants to keep us busy (and preoccupied).
  • Such a situation creates an accelerated mind, unable to relax, allergic to inner silence and unable to appreciate the present moment. Because, for anxiety, only the pending tasks and the pressure of the next day matter.

There are very – too – many people without free time. But beware, the fact that they work a lot does not mean that they are more productive.

Just because they devote more time to an occupation doesn’t make them brighter or happier. Because a busy life without leisure time leads to discomfort and mental disorders such as anxiety, depression, etc.

Free time is synonymous with good health: doing nothing at one time of the day can be incredibly beneficial. You should not wait until you have a vacation to allow yourself moments of inactivity. Indulging in a few hours of tranquility resets the mind, reduces stress, strengthens creativity and is synonymous with sanity.

So it’s time to change our mental pattern: always being doing something can also be counterproductive. Life can only be savored when we give ourselves quality time. This often involves leisure, calm and even the art of doing nothing.
